{"id":6141,"date":"2012-07-18T12:10:34","date_gmt":"2012-07-18T16:10:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.musicalamerica.com\/mablogs\/?p=6141"},"modified":"2012-08-02T22:05:05","modified_gmt":"2012-08-03T02:05:05","slug":"epiphanies-and-masochism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.musicalamerica.com\/mablogs\/?p=6141","title":{"rendered":"Epiphanies and Masochism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>by Sedgwick Clark<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>An Irresistible\u00a0Concert\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So soon after declaring my relief at\u00a0being able to\u00a0put my concert calendar on hold\u00a0in the summer, Le Poisson Rouge presented a program too irresistible to miss, with three well-known chamber musicians at the top of their form: violinist Harumi Rhodes, cellist Caroline Stinson, and pianist Molly Morkoski in Ravel\u2019s <em>Sonate posthume pour violon et piano<\/em>, Messiaen\u2019s eight <em>Pr\u00e9ludes pour piano<\/em>, Takemitsu\u2019s <em>Distance de F\u00e9e <\/em>for violin and piano, Debussy\u2019s <em>Sonate pour violoncello et piano<\/em>, and Piazzolla\u2019s <em>Verano Portena <\/em>for piano trio, from <em>The Four Seasons<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>One of the best concerts I heard all year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Modest Epiphany <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a moment in Woody Allen\u2019s new film\u00a0<em>To Rome with Love <\/em>when a woman lost in Rome and late for an appointment drops her cell phone down a sewer grate. The unison gasp of horror from a full house at Lincoln Plaza Theaters was my biggest laugh of the evening.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Masochism on Broadway<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tracie Bennett\u2019s all-stops-pulled portrayal of Judy Garland\u2019s last three months of drugs, drink, and depression in Peter Quilter\u2019s <em>End of the Rainbow <\/em>at the Belasco Theatre is a study in masochism\u2014although whose I\u2019m not sure\u2014and she relives it eight times a week.
