Moving Bodies |
|
Pianist/actor David Beck will play live his own compositions along with selections by Bach, Vivaldi and Mozart, to accompany the play "Moving Bodies" by Lorraine Liscio. The play takes place in Paris 1740, the Age of Enlightenment, and centers around Emilie, the Marquise du Chatelet, lover of Voltaire and a distinguished scientist. When Emilie corrects a mistake made by Newton in a letter to the Journal of Science, the Secretary strikes back: "Your female condition is the source of your illusions." But Emilie was right; Newton got it wrong. Defiant, excessive and real, Emilie fought for love and for her place as one of the world's greatest scientists but, as a woman, she was never allowed to have both. |

Beginning September 28, 2018 and running through to May 3, 2019 Bloomingdale School of Music continues its popular free concert series of diverse programs that shine a light on varying historical musical periods, genres- classical, jazz, world, as well as works by composers both living and the music of underrepresented women composers. BSM's interest in new music continues through the annual commissioning of a professional composer to create new music for BSM student ensembles; and participation as a host site for Con Edison's Exploring the Metropolis Composer in Residence. This year's composer in residence and BSM commissioned composer is Taylor Brook. |

SUMAC at National Sawdust |
|
The seed of SUMAC was planted somewhere around the end of 2010 or the beginning of 2011, sown upon the smoldering ashes of guitarist/vocalist Aaron Turner’s former band ISIS. Turner had seen his prior project reach full fruition over the span of thirteen years, and it had reached the end of its lifecycle. ISIS had come to define an entire genre of architecturally meticulous and sonically nuanced metal, but at some point all the corners had been mapped, all the fortifications constructed. There was nothing left to build. Turner continued his musical path contributing to the deconstructed panoramic soundscapes of Mamiffer, the misanthropic crowd-baiting sludge of Old Man Gloom, the exploratory electrical whirr of House Of Low Culture, and a slew of studio projects running the gamut from slow-crawling minimalist pop (Jodis), to fiery d-beat punk (Split Cranium). In the midst of all these endeavors however, Turner tended to another venture, one that germinated slowly, its DNA already charted but its flesh still t |

Featuring World Guitar Pioneer Matthew Montfort, Arabic Violin Virtuoso Georges Lammam, and Indian Tabla Master Vishal Nagar
This program by the pioneering world music group Ancient Future blends the rhythms and melodies of the Arabian Peninsula, Spain, and India with contemporary jazz and rock, producing an irresistible and exhilarating fusion that captures the essence of pilgrimage, cultural exchange, exploration, and migration. The trio consists of scalloped fretboard guitarist Matthew Montfort performing with Arabic violin virtuoso Georges Lammam and Indian tabla master Vishal Nagar.
