Martin Katz & Friends What's in a Song: Hugo Wolf's Complete Mörike Songs |
|
There are many important art song composers, chief among them Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, and Richard Strauss, but Hugo Wolf occupies his own special place. Although Wolf composed in other forms, his fame rests almost entirely on his songs. In just a few months in 1888, in an incredible burst of creativity, the Austrian composer wrote 53 songs set to the poetry of Eduard Mörike, a German author whose work focused on idyllic scenes of nature and delightful fairytales. These songs are the pinnacle of the fusion of words and music. Four singers, joined by pianist Martin Katz, bring these 53 songs to life over two concerts in this special edition of What’s in a Song. |

ACMP has commissioned award-winning composer Paul Moravec to compose a new piece for adult amateur players. This commission marks the first step in ACMP's initiatives to make contemporary chamber music more accessible to non-professional musicians. Moravec's new piece for violin or clarinet, cello and piano will be published by Subito Music Corporation and will be available in early 2020.
"ACMP's 2020 season introduces new initiatives that will deeply enrich the experiences of chamber music players wherever they are," said Jennifer Clarke, Executive Director, ACMP. Works & Process at the Guggenheim Spring 2020 Season Opening Night Cabaret |
|
Works & Process, the performing arts series at the Guggenheim, presents an Opening Night Cabaret with countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo to kick of the Spring 2020 Season on Monday, January 6, 2020 at 7:30pm.
Before he was an opera singer, countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo (Akhnaten and Glass Handel) was a Broadway baby moving from community theater to national tours, and eventually to the Great White Way. Now, Costanzo is looking back to go forward. For one night only, in the New York premiere of his cabaret, he revisits his childhood, drawing on the leading ladies, crooners, and icons that helped form him. And, in a twist, he finds just enough low to balance out his highs. Developed with the Bearded Ladies Cabaret for Opera Philadelphia's Festival O19. Directed by John Jarboe. Musical arrangements by Heath Allen. Scenic design by Machine Dazzle.
Opening Night Chairs: Joanna Fisher, Bart Friedman, Andrew J. Martin-Weber, and Anh-Tuyet Nguyen

Broken Silence: Towards Healing the Abuse Scandal in Catholic Church |
|
Created by Wandelweiser composer Craig Shepard and presented by Music for Contemplation (MuFoCo), "Broken Silence" is a live performance which powerfully combines word and music to contemplate the subjects of abuse and corruption, particularly the sex scandal in the Roman Catholic Church.
It features an original, contemplative score as listeners engage with court testimony related to the scandal. Shepard’s aim is to support healing for all involved, but also to develop practices that can help other institutions to deal with subjects such as abuse and corruption. Composer Eve Beglarian describes the performance as “by far the most meaningful live musical experience I’ve had in the past year—somewhere between a Quaker service, a group meditation, and a concert.”
Musicians include Erin Rogers (tenor saxophone), Kristen McKeon (alto saxophone), and Elisa Corona, Dan Joseph, Dev Ray and Alex Lahoski (elbow steel string acoustic guitars), with Shepard as speaker.

Jonathan Biss Plays Beethoven |
|
Two breathtaking, all-Beethoven programs of solo piano treasures with American piano phenomenon Jonathan Biss. A true virtuoso, Biss is widely hailed for his deeply felt musical interpretations and award-winning recordings, approaching music with a scholar’s curiosity and a master storyteller’s knack for captivating the ears and minds of his audience.
These very special performances are part of the pianist’s years-long celebration of Beethoven’s piano sonatas, recording all 32 sonatas and performing them around the world. From the brilliant lightness of Beethoven’s “Pastoral” Piano Sonata, the playful yet deeply emotional “Hunt” Sonata, to the ‘Hammerklavier,” considered one of Beethoven’s most important works and one of the greatest piano sonatas of all time.
