Daniil Trifonov

Artist of the Year

The brilliant Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov is a true virtuoso: All the notes are stunningly in place but also, by turns, gloriously invested with color, expression, and style. He was 20 when he won the Arthur Rubinstein Competition, and that same year he took first place at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. Before long, the pianist had performed with the orchestras in New York, Cleveland, Boston, Philadelphia, and Chicago.

Julia Wolfe Composer of the Year Her Pulitzer Prize-winning Anthracite Fields in 2015 and MacArthur “Genius” fellowship the following year led to a flurry of commissions, including world premieres by the New York Philharmonic and New World Symphony in the first half of 2019.

	Carlos Miguel Prieto Conductor of the Year Carlos Miguel Prieto strives to build international bridges by way of classical music. “People are asking for music from all parts of the world,” he says, “looking to us for inclusion, asking for musicians to make sense of the mess.” In the words of Yo-Yo Ma, “He is a conductor for our 21st century.”

Anthony Roth Costanzo Vocalist of the Year With restless intelligence and passion for communicating through art, Anthony Roth Costanzo wants to do more than just insert himself into available slots. “As an opera singer in today’s world, you can’t just sing your roles well,” he insists. “You have to be a creative spirit and a driving force.”

	JACK Quartet Ensemble of the Year This group’s fresh, energetic, and stylistically omnivorous approach to the contemporary repertoire makes it a worthy heir to the tradition of new-music quartets that goes back to the Composers Quartet in the 1960s and rivals the Kronos and Arditti Quartets of today.
