San Francisco Declares May 20, 2017 Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg Day

May 19, 2017 | By Grant Communications
In honor of her contributions to “the vitality of our City and the dedicated work” she has done that “truly represents San Francisco values at their best”, Edwin M. Lee, Mayor of the City and County of San Francisco has proclaimed Saturday, May 20, 2017 as Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg Day in San Francisco.

The recognition comes to Ms. Salerno-Sonnenberg as she brings her tenure as Music Director of the New Century Chamber Orchestra to a close with her final concert with the organization this weekend, Saturday, May 20th.

Since joining New Century Chamber Orchestra in January 2008, Nadja has brought premieres by internationally renowned composers, including Clarice Assad, William Bolcom, Mark O’Connor, Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, Lera Auerbach, Michael Daugherty, Derek Bermel and Jennifer Higdon to the San Francisco Bay area, led the orchestra on three national tours, released three CDs and one DVD, and raised the local and national recognition of the conductorless chamber orchestra.

Passion, excitement, and innovation are the hallmarks of internationally acclaimed soloist and chamber musician Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg’s artistry. Praised for her compelling performances, daring interpretations, and electric stage presence, she is one of today’s leading violinists, renowned for her work on the concert stage, and in the recording studio. She continues to share her experience and knowledge in guest residencies at universities throughout the country. 2016-17 marks the second year of her popular multi-year engagement as "Resident Artist" with Loyola University New Orleans.

Ms. Salerno-Sonnenberg’s professional career began in 1981 when she won the Walter W. Naumburg International Violin Competition. In 1983 she was recognized with an Avery Fisher Career Grant, and in 1988 was Ovations Debut Recording Artist of the Year. In 1999, Nadja was honored with the prestigious Avery Fisher Prize, awarded to instrumentalists who have demonstrated “outstanding achievement and excellence in music.”
