The World Premiere of Richard Brooks’ String Quartet No. 5 will be presented on Tuesday, December 1 @ 7:30 PM at Saint Peter’s Church at Citigroup Center, 54th St. and Lexington Ave. in Manhattan. This will be part of The New York Composers Circle’s New Music for Strings and Piano concert.

The composer writes about the piece, “String Quartet No. 5 (2013) is in two movements. Neither movement follows any of the traditional structural patterns, although the second has some features of rondo form.”

“The first movement begins, adagio molto, with several hymn-like phrases. An abrupt change of mood and tempo (molto vivacissimo) introduces fast, scurrying-like figures. After developing these figures and adding occasional “waltz” patterns, the opening adagio returns to conclude the movement. The second movement begins, allegro molto, with a lively syncopated theme used in close imitation among the four instruments. A second, more lyrical theme is introduced in the viola and cello with spiccato accompaniment in the violins. This relationship is then reversed and leads to a development of the syncopated theme, followed by a second appearance of the more lyrical theme. A slower contrasting section interrupts the momentum but quickly returns to the syncopated theme for further development. A brief recollection of the slower idea leads to a final soft reiteration of the syncopated theme to conclude the quartet.” String Quartet No. 5 is about 10 minutes in length.

Performers will be Gregor Kitzis and Funda Cizmecioghu, violins, Kim Foster, viola and David Eggar, cello.

Other composers on this NYCC program are Roger Blanc, John Eaton, Susan J. Fischer, Joe Gianono, Emiko Hayashi, Carl Kanter and Debra Kaye.

The concert is free and open to the public, however a $20 donation is suggested. For more information, visit http://nycomposerscircle.org/.
