TPO Thailand International Composition Festival Gala Concert

The Thailand International Composition Festival (TICF) was established with the goal of improving the standard of Composition Education in Thailand and Southeast Asia. Founded in 2005 by the award-winning Thai composer Narong Prangcharoen, TICF has been the growing focus for Contemporary Music in Thailand since its inception. Composers and performers from all over the world have convened to provide major contributions to the festival. Past guests have included Augusta Read Thomas, Bernard Rands, Ken Ueno, Federico Garcia de Castro, Mara Gibson, James Mobberley,Robert Beaser, Bright Sheng, Norbert Palej, Zygmunt Krauze, Amy Williams, Paul Patterson, Antonio Celso Ribeiro, the New York New Music Ensemble, Tetris String Quartet, Third Angle New Music Ensemble, New Ear Ensemble, Dave Eggar, Pauline Kim Harris, Rachel Golub, Tomoko Honda, Luisa Sello, Vicennium Void, Enclave Ensemble, Siam Saxophone Quartet, Ryu Goto, Michael Hall, Alvin Wong, Delta David Gier, Fabricio Rovasio, Bennett Lerner, Sngkn Kim, and many others. This year, TICF will continue in the tradition of excellence, established by previous years.

TICF 2015 will take place from 6-11 July, at Mahidol University College of Music. In addition to performances, the festival will feature master lectures from the guest composers, masterclasses with guest composers, regional and world premieres performances of contemporary works, student works from local universities, and numerous opportunities for contemporary composers to explore the contemporary idiom with like-minded individuals, and attain insight into all aspects of composing music in the world of today.

*The concert will begin with Horizons (1999) composed and conducted by Tania Leon. The Cuban-born Tania Leon is a vital new music personality, highly regarded as a composer and conductor whose compositions are, "Aboundingly earthy, rhythmic, and embellished by deeply moving nostalgia, [standing] at the crossroads of every musical emotion."

*Double Concerto (2010) for Baritone Saxophone, Percussion, and Orchestra by Mathew Rosenblum. His music is filled with diverse musical elements derived from classical, jazz, rock, and world music traditions. Using a variety of tuning systems, his work does not live within traditional boundaries, creating a compellingly fresh landscape.

*Thai composer and founder of the Thailand International Composition festival, Narong Prangcharoen’s Cello Concerto Far from Home will follow. Mr. Prangcharoen is currently recognized as one of Asia’s leading contemporary composers - Incorporating a love of sound into an atmospheric tapestry of orchestration, this piece will be sure to delight.

*Zhou Long’s piano concerto Postures will close the program. Zhou Long is internationally recognized for creating a unique body of music that brings together the aesthetic concepts and musical elements of East and West. This concerto is exciting, lively, and highlights the piano as a virtuoso percussion instrument.This concert is a must see for music lovers of all ages! Conductor: José-Luis Novo Tania Leon
