Over 900 people contributed to the Kickstarter.com campaign to finance the "Open Well-Tempered Clavier", in the end raising more than $44,000. The studio sessions were held in Berlin's Teldex Studio (formerly Telarc), along with recording engineer Anne-Marie Sylvestre and piano technician Gerd Finkenstein. The instrument used is a Bösendorfer 280 that was provided especially for this recording by the manufacturer.

Early critics have deep praise for the recording. Grego Appelgate Edwards writes:

Yet in all the years, all the versions, I have never heard 'Book 1' done better than on the new recording by pianist Kimiko Ishizaka (Navona 5993, 2-CDs).

And Robert Hugill writes:

Her approach brings clarity to the more complex of Bach's textures with the fugues in particular benefiting, and The faster movements are often quite perky, and where the rhythms suggest it she really makes the music dance. I was constantly delighted to discover how dance-based much of this music can be.

The recording is released on the Navona Recordings label, where the company enthusiastically embraced the novell concept of producing a double CD release that actively encourages people to copy, share, and use the digital recordings freely. The recording made it to #1 on the Amazon.com "Hot New Releases" charts on March 8.

Along with the recording, a new digital edition of the score to Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier has been produced, and is also available under a public domain license. Digital scores have distinct advantages over paper and PDF scans when it comes to editing, arranging, and accessibility, such as making them suitable for visually impaired musicians.

About Kimiko Ishizaka

Kimiko Ishizaka is a german-japanese pianist living in Cologne, Germany. She began her career as a member of the award winning Ishizaka Trio, and has, since 2000, dedicated herself to solo performance, with a special emphasis on Bach and Chopin.

A gifted and obviously devoted Bachian --James Oestreich, New York Times

Ishizaka's interpretation is characterised by straightforward musicianship, immaculate technical aplomb, and a warm, beautifully modulated sonority. Counterpoint passes back and forth between the hands in a conversational and judiciously balanced manner, while a strong lyrical impulse informs the cross-handed variations' rapid, bravura passages. --Jed Distler, Gramophone Magazine
