The World Premiere of Barbara Harbach’s Terezin Children’s Songs for baritone, violin and piano will be performed by Michael Penny and accompanying instrumentalists on Tuesday, September 23 – 7:30 PM at Union University’s Hartley Recital Hall in Hendersonville, Tennessee as part of Professor Penny’s Faculty Voice Recital.

A cycle of five songs, Terezin Children’s Songs is based on children’s poetry from the Terezin concentration camp where between the years 1942-1944, 15,000 children were held and less than 100 of them survived. The titles of the songs are Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep, Birdsong, Forgotten, On a Sunny Evening and The Butterfly.

The composer writes, “In the poems and drawings of the children, many smuggled out of the camp, we see the daily misery of these uprooted children, as well as their courage and optimism, their hopes and fears. These innocent and honest depictions allow us to see through the eyes of the children what life was like in the ghetto. Their art reveals a maturity beyond their years, are haunting reminders of what no child should ever have to see. In spite of the circumstances, the poetry is beautiful and uplifting – telling a story that resonates in each of us.”
