Richard Brooks' l'Après Midi d'un Schönberg, a new vocal chamber work with libretto by author Nancy Bogen, will be given its World Premiere on Wednesday, September 17 – 8:00 PM at Voertman Hall of the University of North Texas College of Music in Denton.

The performance, by Dr. Arturo Ortega and the University of North Texas Pierrot Chamber Players, will also include Schönberg's Pierrot Lunaire and Arturo Marquez’ Danzon No. 2, arr. Bobby Lapinski.

The composer writes, “l'Après Midi d'un Schönberg (2012) is a cantata for four singers, flute, clarinet, violin, cello, and piano (the “Pierrot” Consort). The libretto by Nancy Bogen is based on four photographs taken in the Summer of 1907 of Arnold Schoenberg, his first wife Matilda (Zemlinsky), his daughter Gertrude (Trudi), his two students Erwin Stein and Heinrich Jalowetz, and two young ladies whose names are not known. The photographer is presumed to be Arnold’s brother Heinrich, and one of the young ladies is presumed to be his girlfriend. The other lady is presumed to be Jalowetz’s girlfriend.”

“Each of the four singers takes two roles, as follows - Arnold Schoenberg/Heinrich Jalowetz (tenor), Heinrich Schoenberg/Erwin Stein (baritone), Matilda Schoenberg /”Ursula” (mezzo-soprano) and Trudi Schoenberg/”Gretchen” (soprano)” “The piece is intended to be a kind-hearted amusement and is dedicated with affection to Arnold Schoenberg’s grandson, Arnold Greissle-Schoenberg.”

The UNT performance will feature Heidi Dietrich Klein, soprano; Katrina Burggraf-Kledas, alto; Nathan Hodgson, tenor; and Daniel Myers, baritone; along with Christian Gonzalez, flute/piccolo; Bobby Lapinski, clarinet/bass clarinet; Veronika Vassileva, violin/viola; Eric Smith, cello; and Eva Polgar, piano.

The program will also be presented on September 22 at New York City's Austrian Cultural Forum.
