Wednesday, June 27 at 7pm in The Greene Space Tickets On Sale Now

(June 18, 2012 – New York, NY) – On Wednesday June 27 at 7pm, OPERAVORE, WQXR’s site and stream for opera lovers, will celebrate three rising stars of the genre: sopranos Angela Meade and Ailyn Pérez and tenor Stephen Costello.

WQXR’s Naomi Lewin will host an exclusive concert of arias and duets performed by Meade, Pérez and Costello – all recipients of the prestigious Richard Tucker Award – in The Jerome L. Greene Performance Space at WQXR, a state-of- the-art, acoustically superior live venue and broadcast studio. The showcase marks Pérez’s first New York musical appearance since being named the 2012 Richard Tucker Award winner. Piano accompaniment will be performed by the distinguished Brian Zeger.

The event will include an intimate conversation with soprano Aprile Millo, winner of the 1985 Richard Tucker Award, and Barry Tucker, son of the great American tenor and President of the Richard Tucker Music Foundation, about Richard Tucker's impact and legacy.

OPERAVORE is WQXR’s online home for all things opera, including a blog, news articles and a 24-hour music stream. The Operavore blog features up-to-the-minute news, reviews, quick hits and commentary on the world of opera. Fred Plotkin and Olivia Giovetti follow the performers, composers, directors and designers that inspire, both in New York and beyond. The blog is an online space for opera lovers to discuss their passions, and for newcomers to discover what's fresh and exciting in the genre. The Operavore stream is a carefully programmed mix of opera arias, duets, scenes, choruses and instrumental numbers. It also features full operas every week with World of Opera, which streams Thursdays at 4pm, Saturdays at 5pm and Sundays at 1pm. Operavore is available at www.wqxr.org/operavore.

Tickets for Richard Tucker Award Winners Live are $15. The evening will also be available via live video webcast at www.wqxr.org/operavore and www.thegreenespace.org, and will be recorded for future broadcast on WQXR 105.9 FM.

Lyric soprano Ailyn Pérez, winner of the 2012 Richard Tucker Award, recently starred in Los Angeles Opera’s signature production of La bohème with 2009 Tucker Award winner Stephen Costello. Of their performance, the Los Angeles Times observed, “Pérez and Costello possess full-bodied voices and enjoy letting them bloom with Italianate leisure.” Angela Meade – recipient of both the 2011 Richard Tucker Award and the Metropolitan Opera’s 2012 Beverly Sills Artist Award – has been hailed by The New Yorker as “astounding… a very musical singer, naturally and intelligently riding the phrase.”

Founded in 1975, the Richard Tucker Music Foundation is a non-profit cultural organization dedicated to perpetuating the artistic legacy of the great Brooklyn-born tenor by nurturing the careers of talented American opera singers and by bringing opera into the community. Through awards, grants for study, performance opportunities, and other activities, the foundation provides professional development for singers at various stages of their careers. It also offers free performances in the New York metropolitan area and supports music education enrichment programs. The foundation’s most substantial prize is the annual Richard Tucker Award of $30,000, which is given to an artist judged to be on the threshold of a major international career. Previous award winners include Renée Fleming, Deborah Voigt, David Daniels, and Joyce DiDonato.
