Culture Development Needs Women and Music

September 21, 2011 | By Lorena Jiménez Alonso
Press Officer European Programme WIMUST
Since 1978 the International Adkins Chiti: Women in Music Foundation has promoted empowerment and mainstreaming for women composers and practitioners. The 2009 European Parliament resolution on equality of treatment and access in performing arts invites actors in the field to increase the presence of female creators and works in programming. Without updated information and strong pressure from the women themselves, this will not happen. Without equal opportunities for women in the arts, the future of creative and cultural industries will also be determined by men.

Throughout the 3-year programme WIMUST- Women in Music Uniting Strategies for Talent, the Foundation Adkins Chiti, working with the European Members of the International Honour Committee, will carry out a series of activities aimed at the progressive fulfillment of an increased recognition of women as crucial players in the arts and cultural environment, fostering a EU cross-cultural approach to arts training policies and the role of women in the cultural Industries.

Patricia Adkins Chiti (scientific director of WIMUST programme) »With knowledge of our Equal Rights as women, and above all remember that these must apply to women artists and women with the cultural industries, we can design a better Europe and World«

In a unique position, as the oldest and largest network of women music practitioners, the International Adkins Chiti Foundation: Women in Music will offer three-month residencies for musicologists, composers and music practitioners in Fiuggi, as well as ten day residencies for women composers commissioned with new works, encouraging trans-national mobility. Residencies for women artists of different ages, musical fields and professional experiences are a rare and essential form of inter-cultural dialogue.

Selected Musicologists, Women Composers and Musicians Announced: The following composers/musicologists/musicians have been selected for the WIMUST Residencies of three months in Fiuggi 2011: Selen Gulun (Turkey), Arantxa Hernández (Spain), Wilma Campitelli (Bari, Italy).

Selected Women Composers Announced: The following women composers have been selected for the WIMUST ten days residencies in Fiuggi 2011: Irene Kepler (Austria), Artemia Aifotitti (Cyprus), Mihaela Stanculescu-Vosganian (Rumania), Kikki Dellisanti (Italy), Enrica Sciandrone (Italy)
