About Mischa Maisky: Mischa Maisky has the distinction of being the only cellist in the world to have studied with both Mstislav Rostropovich and Gregor Piatigorsky. Rostropovich described his playing as combining “poetry and exquisite delicacy with great temperament and brilliant technique." Born in Latvia, and educated in Russia, after his repatriation to Israel, Maisky has been enthusiastically received in London, Paris, Berlin, Vienna, New York and Tokyo, along with the rest of the major music centers. He considers himself a citizen of the world: “I’m playing an Italian cello, with French and German bows, Austrian and German strings, my 6 children were born in 4 different countries, my second wife is half Sri Lankan – half Italian, I’m driving a Japanese car, wear a Swiss watch, an Indian necklace and I feel at home everywhere where people appreciate and enjoy classical music.“ As an exclusive Deutsche Grammophon artist for over 30 years, Maisky has made over 35 recordings with orchestras such as the Vienna, Israel, and Berlin Philharmonics, London Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, among others. His recordings have enjoyed worldwide critical acclaim and have been awarded the prestigious Record Academy Prize in Tokyo, Echo Deutscher Schallplattenpreis, Grand Prix du Disque in Paris, and Diapason d’Or of the Year, and have been nominated for multiple Grammy Awards. Highlights of Maisky’s career include his 2000 worldwide Bach tour, which included over 100 concerts; a December 2016 trio performance in Carnegie Hall with Itzhak Perlman and Evgeny Kissin; and a 2016 European tour celebrating 40 years of collaboration with pianist Martha Argerich. About Orpheus Chamber Orchestra: A standard-bearer of innovation and artistic excellence, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra is one of the world’s foremost chamber orchestras. It was founded in 1972 by a group of like-minded young musicians determined to combine the intimacy and warmth of a chamber ensemble with the richness of an orchestra. With 71 albums, including the Grammy Award-winning Shadow Dances: Stravinsky Miniatures, and 45 commissioned and premiered original works, Orpheus rotates musical leadership roles and strives to perform diverse repertoire through collaboration and open dialogue. Performing without a conductor, Orpheus presents an annual series at Carnegie Hall and tours extensively to major national and international venues. Visit www.orpheusnyc.org for more information. About Orpheus Chamber Orchestra Educational Initiatives: Orpheus has trademarked its signature mode of operation, the Orpheus Process®, an original method that places democracy at the center of artistic execution. It has been the focus of studies at Harvard University and of leadership seminars at IBM, Morgan Stanley, and Memorial Sloan- Kettering Hospital, among others. Orpheus aims to bring this unique approach to students of all ages through its worldwide education and engagement programs: Access Orpheus-NYC, Orpheus Music Academy, and Orpheus Leadership Institute. Access Orpheus-NYC shares the orchestra’s collaborative music-making process with K-12 public school students from all five boroughs in New York City. While New York is among the cultural capitals of the world, many schoolchildren are underserved in arts participation. Access Orpheus-NYC helps to bridge this gap with in-class visits, invitations to working rehearsals, instrument discovery days, and free tickets for performances at Carnegie Hall. The Orpheus Music Academy encompasses Orpheus’ programs for intermediate and advanced music students. Orpheus musicians share their artistry, expertise, and collaborative approach to music-making through masterclasses with Orpheus musicians and guest artists, side-by-side workshops, and residencies on tour. In 2018, Orpheus is proud to launch Orpheus@Mannes in partnership with the Mannes School of Music. Providing a week-long immersion in the Orpheus Process® for conservatory-level students, Orpheus@Mannes is the first program of its kind to focus exclusively on conductorless orchestra training and artistic leadership for the next generation of orchestral musicians. The Orpheus Leadership Institute brings the Orpheus Process® to the private and nonprofit sectors and educational institutions to empower the leaders of tomorrow through collaborative management training. Teams of all kinds participate in customizable programs to gain insight from Orpheus’ democratic process and develop essential skills in communication, collective ownership, and creative problem solving. # # #
