2018 Johansen International Competition Application is Now Open

May 17, 2017 | By Harriet Kaplan
Administrative Director
It is rare for $67,000 in prize money to be earmarked for young string players 13 to 17 years of age, yet that is what happens every three years when the Johansen International Competition for Young String Players takes place. The JIC was founded in 1997 through the generosity of a trust fund established by Anna Storch Johansen, who wanted to encourage young musicians with significant prize awards at a time when they need it most – when they must make decisions about whether to continue with their dedication to music.

Sponsored by the Friday Morning Music Club (FMMC) Foundation, Inc., the 2018 JIC will be held in Washington, DC, March 14–17, 2018. Judges are violinist Chee-Yun, violist Timothy Deighton, and cellist Peter Stumpf.

The JIC attracts young string players of the highest level from around the world. Past winners have gone on to win the Naumberg International Violin Competition, the Tchaikovsky International Competition, the Joseph Joachim International Violin Competition, the Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition, and more. Past JIC winners have been selected by Young Concert Artists, have received the Avery Fischer Grant, and have been named Jack Kent Cooke scholars.

The $67,000 in prize money encompasses separate awards for violin, viola, and cello at each level plus an additional $1,000 award for the best performance of the new work commissioned for the competition. First prize for each instrument is $10,000; second prize is $7,000; and third prize is $5,000. The JIC is open to students of violin, viola, or cello ages 13 through 17 years. Applicants may not be under professional management. The first round of the competition takes place through a video audition. Details, repertoire requirements, and the application are online at www.getacceptd.com/jic. The application deadline is December 1, 2017. To request a brochure, e-mail johansencomp@gmail.com.
