Victoria Bond's Cutting Edge Concerts New Music Festival features a double bill of new classical music and jazz on Monday, April 20, at 7:30pm at Leonard Nimoy Thalia at Peter Norton Symphony Space. First, it's the "ferociously virtuosic" pianist Paul Barnes performing the world premiere of Piano Thoughts II by Lukas Floyd, as well as new works by Jason Bahr and Zack Stanton. Then it's the festival debut of Miho Hazama's acclaimed m_unit jazz ensemble. The ensemble, joined by saxophone soloist Steve Wilson, will perform selections by Hazama, including the world premiere of Spiral Steps, as well as world premieres by composer/trombonist Scott Ninmer and composer/reed player Chris Reza.
Originally from Tokyo, Miho Hazama is an award-winning composer and arranger with a highly distinctive and original sound. Ms. Hazama recently released her debut album "Journey to Journey" with her m_unit jazz ensemble, which received universal praise from NPR, DownBeat, JazzTimes, and Jazz Japan Magazine. m_unit has played all over New York, gracing the stages of venues such as Blue Note and The Jazz Gallery.
Praised by the New York Times for his "Lisztian thunder and deft fluidity," pianist Paul Barnes has electrified audiences with his intensely expressive playing and cutting-edge programming. Barnes' eleventh CD The American Virtuoso features the music of Philip Glass, Samuel Barber, and Joan Tower.
Tickets for the April 20 concert at 7:30 are $20 in advance or $30 day of show. A special subscription package for all three concerts is available for $39 (must add tickets for all three concerts to cart to see discount). Tickets are available online at symphonyspace.org, by calling (212) 864-5400 or visiting the box office (2537 Broadway at 95th Street, New York, NY). More information is at cuttingedgeconcerts.org.
