A preview performance of Meira Warshauer’s Perpetual Slavery Or for violin and piano will be given by Opus Two, violinst William Terwilliger and pianist Andrew Cooperstock on Sunday, March 29 - 5:00 PM in the University of South Carolina School of Music Recital Hall, Room 206, 813 Assembly Street, in Columbia.

The composer writes, “Perpetuate Slavery Or is a musical response to the painting with this title by Alex Powers, found at the Columbia Museum of Art, Columbia, South Carolina. The artwork grapples with President Lincoln’s decision to engage in war with the slave-holding South, and heightens the human costs of both war and slavery. The music here portrays the complexities of the intolerable situation: unrest, slaves crying out against injustice, the weight of Lincoln’s solitary decision, the impending march of war which takes over. The end points towards a resolution which is still in process today. ” Perpetuate Slavery Or was composed for Opus Two and made possible by a grant from the University of South Carolina Office of the Provost. Terwilliger and Cooperstock will also perform her Bracha for violin and piano, of which she writes, “Bracha (http://meirawarshauer.com/works/bracha/) is a musical interpretation of the Jewish concept of blessing. The Hebrew word, bracha, is related to breicha, which means pool of water, or flowing stream. In this composition, it is interpreted as a stream of Divine goodness flowing downward into the world.” Other composers on the program will be Stravinsky, Ysaÿe and Brahms. The March 29 concert is free and open to the public. For more information, call 803-576-5763 or visit http://calendar.sc.edu/music/event/showEventMore.rdo.
