The Fire Pink Trio will be in concert, performing music for flute, viola and harp on Wednesday, October 29 at 7:30 PM at Carol Woods Community, 750 Weaver Dairy Road in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Repertoire for this Poetry in Motion concert will be Doppler Effect by Adrienne Albert, Tango 99 by Canadian composer Milton Barnes and Trio by Patrick Zimmerli.

Adrienne Albert writes about Doppler Effect, “The notion of writing a piece based on the findings of an Austrian mathematician who observed the increase and decrease in the pitch of sound when the source and observer are getting closer or further apart came to me while traveling through Italy and hearing the myriad sirens passing by through the dense traffic. The motif descends by a minor second returning to the original harmony combined with the repeated minor seconds portraying the incessant sounds of car horns. The melodic lines portray the vibrancy and sensuality of the people in contrast to the craziness around them.” Visit the composer at http://www.adriennealbert.com/.

Patrick Zimmerli has written about his work, “When I was approached in 2007 by the Arizona Friends of Chamber Music to write this Trio, I knew that I would be taking a step into the unknown. Although I had written fairly extensively for each instrument (and played the flute when younger), the ensemble, with its impressionist, French connotations, was not something I had gravitated towards as a way of expressing my rather “American” musical ideas. To find the sound I was seeking, I decided to shun the idiomatic and coloristic effects that Ravel and Debussy used so beautifully for the ensemble, effects however that I felt bore those composers’ stamps too explicitly. I focused instead on more universal — and less stylistically defining — musical devices such as theme, harmony, and rhythms, with fairly simple textures and traditional means of development. Like most of what I do, the piece mixes jazz and classical idioms. Formally, with its fast-slow-fast arch, it has much more in common with chamber music of the 18th or 19th century than that of the 20th. But its syncopations, melodic sensibility, and overall emotional tone give it an unmistakably 21st-century sound.” Visit him at http://patrickzimmerli.com/site/.

The October 29 concert is free and open to the public. For more information, call 919-968-4511 or visit http://www.carolwoods.org/.

The Trio, consisting of Debra Reuter-Pivetta, flutist, Sheila Browne, violist and Jacquelyn Bartlett, harpist, came together in 2008. Each member brings a multitude of accolades including top prizes in international competitions, concerto performances and critically acclaimed recordings. They perform music from Romantic to Contemporary, Latin and Jazz. Fire Pink Trio brings energy, elegance, style and virtuosity to the stage. In addition to recital performances, the Fire Pink Trio offers residencies, master classes, and educational concerts. Their first CD will be released on MSR Classics in January 2015.
