Pianist On The Fast Track
Since the 1980s, pianist Jeffrey Biegel has established a formidable worldwide presence with standard repertoire and new works via commissioning projects and pop artists' new works for piano and orchestra. He has recorded an all-Bach album, the first release on the Steinway & Sons label, which also released his #1 Christmas album, "A Steinway Christmas Album", and a recording reflecting "A Grand Romance", featuring compositions championed by pianists of 'The Golden Age of the Piano'. His all-Chopin cd was released earlier this year on GPR Records, and his chamber music recordings include new piano trios by Kenneth Fuchs and Glen Roven.
The 2014-15 season brings Biegel to stages and recording studios covering a wide range of styles, starting with Beethoven's "Choral Fantasy" with the Colorado Symphony, led by their new Music Director, Andrew Litton, to Grieg's "Concerto" with the Traverse Symphony Orchestra, conducted by longtime friend, Kevin Rhodes. As a leading professor of piano, Mr. Biegel will be a member of the distinguished jury for the Rina Sala Gallo Competition this month, in Monza, Italy, at the invitation of Vovka Ashkenazy. Upon his immediate return to the USA, Mr. Biegel will perform Keith Emerson's "Concerto no. 1" in New York to celebrate Mr. Emerson's 70th birthday, immediately followed with a performance of the original 1924 piano score to "Rhapsody in Blue" in Carnegie Hall on October 13 with the Brown University Orchestra, led by Paul Schuyler Phillips. The Gershwin work will be recorded a few days following this performance, as part of a new and exciting Naxos label recording collaboration with the Brown University Orchestra featuring additional works by Duke Ellington ("New World A-Coming"), Keith Emerson's concerto and Neil Sedaka's "Manhattan Intermezzo" (with Mr. Biegel's piano arrangement set to Lee Holdridge's orchestration). Mr. Biegel also performs Saint-Saens' "Concerto no. 2" with Steven Byess conducting in Mississippi, and two performances of Jake Runestad's "Dreams of the Fallen" for piano, orchestra and chorus in honor of Veterans Day with conductors Matthew Oberstein (Philharmonic of Southern NJ) and Steven Larsen (Rockford Symphony, IL).
Keeping the pace in commissioning new works, Mr. Biegel will premiere Nashville based composer, Dick Tunney's "Monkees Concerto" employing several famous songs from the legendary rock group. Monkees member, Peter Tork, will attend the premiere with Orchestra Kentucky in January, led by Jeffrey Reed, coupled with the premiere of Mr. Tork's new work for piano and orchestra titled, "Moderato ma non troppo"--a swaggering jazzy romp between piano and orchestra. January also sees the debut performance of the newly created Dicterow-DeMaine-Biegel trio on the Chamber Music Society series in Fort Worth. He will be joined by the highly respected string artists, violinist Glenn Dicterow and, cellist Robert DeMaine, newly appointed Principal Cellist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
Another anticipated visit with Maestro Martin Majkut and the Rogue Valley Symphony for Grieg's "Concerto", paves the way to the world premiere recording of Lucas Richman's "Piano Concerto: In Truth", with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and the premiere of Jeremy Lubbock's "Moods--duet for piano and strings", with Leroy Anderson' delightful "Concerto in C" with Donald Spieth leading the Moravian College Orchestra. A visit with the Arkansas Symphony for "Gershwin: Here to Stay", and a performance of Rachmaninoff "Concerto no. 3" again with Paul Schuyler Phillips and his Pioneer Valley Symphony will help fill out this eclectic season of music. A Naxos cd release of William Bolcom's "Prometheus" with the Pacific Symphony and Pacific Chorale is promised in 2015, and the premiere of Kenneth Fuchs' "Concerto" will be launched in the 2015-16 season with the Springfield Symphony in Massachusetts, Kevin Rhodes conducting.
Mr. Biegel is currently at work for two commissioning projects: Lera Auerbach's new piano concerto, in which the composer will premiere her new opus in Stuttgart in November 2015 before handing the composition over to Mr. Biegel and commissioning orchestras, and, a new project with Ellen Taaffe Zwilich for the first ever "Concerto for Piano, Percussion and Orchestra". Further recording releases include The Complete Sonatas by Mozart for the E1 label, due in 2015.
