LAKESIDE SYMPHONY PRESENTS WORLD PREMIERE FOR TWO PIANOS

The Lakeside Symphony Orchestra (Lakeside, Ohio) just completed its 51st Festival concert season on August 22nd with a brilliant world premiere performance of Roberto Piana’s Edith Piaf Concerto for two pianos with orchestra. This concerto was dedicated to artists Antonio Pompa-Baldi and Emanuela Friscioni and performed by this internationally recognized husband and wife team in collaboration with the Lakeside Symphony under the direction of Music Director, Robert Cronquist. The concerto was inspired by the songs of Edith Piaf, one of Frances’s greatest international stars, on the 50th anniversary of her death.

The work, in three exciting movements, features a collection of Piaf’s most loved songs presented in a brilliant symphonic, yet intimate, collaboration. The concerto closed the Chautauqua Lakeside season to a standing ovation. Mr. Pompa-Baldi and Ms. Friscioni based in Cleveland, Ohio had just returned from Italy for this world premiere performance. Composer, Roberto Piana, born in Sassari, Sardinia , is a multi-faceted artist - as a composer, pianist, essayist and researcher. His music has been performed worldwide and he also maintains a busy performance schedule.

Maestro Cronquist, a close friend of both of these brilliant international artists, was completing his 44th year as Music Director of the Lakeside Symphony and his 25th year as MD of the Cleveland Women’s Orchestra. Both have performed, individually and together, with Maestro Cronquist many times in the past but this fabulous new work was a highlight of their association.

BIOGRAPHY Antonio Pompa-Baldi and Emanuela Friscioni began playing together just as soon as they met, in 1996, in the Northern Italian town of Mezzago, during a Master Class given by Aldo Ciccolini. Since then, their musical partnership has grown steadily as an integral part of their relationship. The husband and wife duo has performed throughout the United States and Europe, in duet and two-piano recitals, as well as with orchestra, to great acclaim. Born and raised in Foggia, Italy, Antonio Pompa-Baldi first came to the U.S. in 1999 to participate in the Cleveland International Piano Competition. He won the First Prize, and, while fulfilling all the engagements that came with it, he and Emanuela decided to make Cleveland their home. A top prize winner at the 1998 Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud Competition, Antonio Pompa-Baldi also won a silver medal at the 2001 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, as well as the Award for the Best Performance of a New Work. Antonio is a Steinway Artist. He serves as Distinguished Professor of Piano at the Cleveland Institute of Music, and gives master-classes around the world. Emanuela Friscioni was born in Cantù, Italy, near Lake Como. Since her debut at the age nine, Emanuela has played solo recitals as well as concertos throughout Italy. After her debut recital at the prestigious “Carducci Society” in Como, music critic Maria Terraneo wrote: “Emanuela Friscioni’s depth reaches the true essence of expression and musical meaning”. Since then, Emanuela appeared in recital and as soloist with orchestras in Italy, Switzerland, France, and the US, performing both traditional and contemporary repertoire. She is on faculty at the Cleveland Institute of Music. She also serves as Director of the Piano Academy of Cuyahoga Community College, and Artistic Director or the "Tri-C Presents" Piano Recital Series.

Antonio and Emanuela, with daughter Eleanor, live in Cleveland Heights.
