The Premiere of Barbara Harbach’s Nocturne noir will be performed by pianist Alla Voskoboynikova as part of her faculty recital on Tuesday, December 4 – 7:30 PM at Touhill Performing Arts Center on the campus of University of Missouri, One University Boulevard in St. Louis.

The composer writes, “In the night, Nocturne noir enters the mind, where dreams and motives intertwine, ever shifting between reality and fantasy. Slow awakening from a deep sleep begins with an ascending jagged scale, becoming more insistent until block chords made of the intervals of the scale lead into an agitated left hand ostinato with an octave melody soaring overhead. Serenity briefly returns with a lyrical section but is continually over ridden by agitation. The nightmare deepens with a jig fugue that begins in the lower reaches of the piano, rising dramatically upwards. All the melodic elements alternate adding to the tension until total awareness of the night abruptly wakes the consciousness in a final ascending upward passage.”

The piece was composed for Ms. Voskoboynikova, who will also present works by Scarlatti, Ravel and Rachmaninoff.

The December 4 program is free and open to the public. For more information, call 314-516-4100 or visit http://www.touhill.org/default.asp?touhill=51&objId=1057.
