"She sings and steals the stage...!"

"Her silvery, flexible soprano sparkled through the coloratura passages..."

Oregon-native Courtney Huffman has already proven her mettle as a vocalist of exceptional artistry, musicality and versatility in a career launched merely two years ago. The soprano will be making her Carnegie Hall debut in a solo recital of American songs on June 18, 2009, with works by composers Lori Laitman, Dominick Argento, Tom Cipullo, Ricky Ian Gordon, Lee Hoiby, Charles Ives and Libby Larsen, as well as several standards from the Great American Songbook.

Fresh on the heels of a stellar performance and rave reviews for her role as Teutile in the Long Beach Opera production of Vivaldi's Motezuma, the 2008 NATS Artist Award winner mused about selecting the program for this milestone appearance in her career:

“I am absolutely thrilled to be making my Carnegie Hall solo recital debut this coming June! I feel incredibly blessed and honored to have this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I knew I would open and close the program with some of the great ‘oldies’, and then contacted several living composers whose work I admire. The final product ends up being a celebration of American song, from the greats of the past to the talent of the present…which is exactly what I had hoped for. It’s going to be an American Celebration that you won’t want to miss!”

A consummate vocalist, Courtney Huffman made her professional operatic debut to critical acclaim in June, 2008 with the Intimate Opera Company of Pasadena, California, as Violetta in Verdi’s La Traviata. She reprised the role with the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra in February 2009 and a month later tackled the demanding role of Teutile in Vivaldi's Motezuma with the Long Beach Opera. The soprano made her international debut in Shanghai and Hong-Kong in 2006, followed by a performance of Dalbavie's Sextine Cyclus at the Aspen Music Festival.

Huffman's repertoire includes Betty in Lowell Liebermann’s Miss Lonelyhearts, Frasquita in Carmen, Belinda in Dido and Aeneas, Drusilla in L’Incoronazione di Poppea, Zerlina in Don Giovanni and Johanna in Sweeney Todd. She has appeared with the Aspen Opera Theater Center, USC Thornton School of Music Opera, and the Illinois Opera Theatre, among others. Courtney Huffman is scheduled to perform a winner’s recital at the NATS National Convention in Salt Lake City, UT in July 2010.

Courtney Huffman is the recipient of the AEIOU Opera Scholarship, third-place winner of the La Jolla Symphony & Chorus Young Artist Competition, winner of the New Horizon Fellowship and the USC Vocal Arts Department Award. She earned her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and her Master's from the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music.
