Princeton University Orchestra and Princeton University Glee Club Perform on April 26 & 27 at Richardson Auditorium in Alexander Hall
Speaking about this program Maestro Pratt says: “This is the first full collaboration between Princeton's Orchestra and Glee Club since 2003, and Richardson will be host to almost two hundred remarkable young musicians. These masterpieces by Poulenc and Ravel will fill the house with the shimmering and ecstatic beauty and drama so unique to French repertoire.” Adds Maestro Crouch, “Poulenc's Gloria reveals a composer bursting with warmth and humor, whose music pays sincere homage to everything from the chapel to the dance hall; whilst Ravel allows the chorus to play a role not afforded by any other choral masterwork - that of a truly orchestral section, woven into the score just like the strings and winds. It is simply not possible to perform this music, or to sit in its presence, without a smile on one's face!”
These concerts are an annual memorial to Stuart B. Mindlin, a Princeton community member who was a member of the Orchestra for many years until his death in 1989. His family has established a fund for the Orchestra in his name.
Tickets are just $15 general, $5 students. Please call 609-258-9220 or visit princeton.edu/utickets
The Princeton University Orchestra is made up of Princeton undergraduate and graduate student musicians. Now in its 117th year, the orchestra plays a wide range of works by composers from the Classical period up through freshly composed works by Princeton composers. Conducted for the 36th year by Michael Pratt, the Orchestra is continuing its tradition of fine music making in its 2012-2013 season.
Currently directed by Gabriel Crouch, the Princeton University Glee Club was founded in 1874 by Andrew Fleming West '74, the first Dean of the Graduate College. In those early years the group consisted of a few young men and was run entirely by its student members, but in 1907 Charles E. Burnham became the first of a long line of distinguished professional musicians to lead the Glee Club, since when the ensemble has established itself as the largest choral body on Princeton's campus, and has distinguished itself both nationally and overseas.
