{"id":793,"date":"2010-12-27T20:43:00","date_gmt":"2010-12-28T00:43:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.musicalamerica.com\/mablogs\/?p=793"},"modified":"2011-10-11T16:23:06","modified_gmt":"2011-10-11T20:23:06","slug":"bringing-in-the-new-year-january-2011-dance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.musicalamerica.com\/mablogs\/?p=793","title":{"rendered":"Bringing in the New Year: January 2011 Dance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Rachel Straus<\/p>\n<p>Today I\u2019m inaugurating a monthly series dedicated to listing, and briefly describing, upcoming New York dance events.\u00a0Here are eight suggestions for the best, the newest, and\/or the most intriguing dance performances happening across the city in January:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>JAN 8 2011<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Baryshnikov Arts Center<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>Wally Cardona \u2028<em>Intervention #4<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Each <em>Intervention<\/em> is a five-day collaboration between dancer\/choreographer Wally Cardona and an expert in a field other than dance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>JAN 9, 10<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Guggenheim Museum<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>Works &amp; Process: Pacific Northwest Ballet\u2014Giselle Revisited<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"event-info\">\n<div class=\"event-description\">\n<p>&#8220;Pacific Northwest Ballet dancers will perform excerpts from Peter Boal&#8217;s new staging of\u00a0<em>Giselle<\/em> prior to its June 2011 premiere at McCaw Hall in Seattle. The ballet features reconstructed choreography by dance scholar Doug Fullington and\u00a0<em>Giselle<\/em> scholar Marian Smith based on Stepanov notation circa 1903 and French sources from the 1840s. PNB will be the first American company in modern times to use the Stepanov notations from the Harvard Theatre Collection for a ballet production. Artistic Director Peter Boal will discuss the production with Fullington and Smith. PNB dancers Carrie Imler, Carla K\u00f6rbes, James Moore, and Seth Orza will perform.&#8221; (taken verbatim from Guggenheim website)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>JAN 10 2011<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Baryshnikov Arts Center\u00a0(in collaboration with The Cunningham Dance Foundation)<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>BAC Flicks: <em>Mondays with Merce<\/em> <em>Ocean<\/em> (1994), \u2028N.Y. Premiere<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><em>Ocean<\/em>, the last film Charles Atlas made with Merce Cunningham, is set 150 feet below and on the floor of Minnesota\u2019s Rainbow Granite Quarry. The choreography is Cunningham\u2019s. The performers, his company, which will disband on December 31, 2011. The St. Cloud Symphony Orchestra is filmed performing an orchestral score by Andrew Culver (inspired by John Cage) and an electronic score by David Tudor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>JAN 18 -22<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Dance Theater Workshop<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>Sidra Bell Dance New York and Gallim Dance<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Sidra Bell Dance New York presents <em>POOL<\/em><em>,<\/em> a surrealist and futuristic work inspired by the recollection of near drowning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Gallim Dance, led by choreographer <span>Andrea Miller<\/span>, present <em>For Glenn Gould<\/em>, a new work inspired by two recordings Glenn Gould made of Bach\u2019s Goldberg Variations, the first in 1964 and the second in 1981 a few weeks before his death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>JAN 19<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Symphony Space<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>Royal Ballet Broadcast of <\/strong><strong><em>Giselle<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In this delayed time, high-def satellite broadcast from the Royal Ballet in London, you can enter the virtual age of \u201clive\u201d theater.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Choreography: After Marius Petipa, music: Adolph Adam, featuring: Marianela Nu\u00f1ez and Rupert Pennefather.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>JAN 20, 21, 23, 28<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">David H. Koch Theater, Lincoln Center<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>New York City Ballet<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Alexei Ratmansky\u2019s <em>Concerto DSCH <\/em>(2008) to Dmitri Shostakovich&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Concerto No. 2 in F Major, Op. 102<\/em> (1957) is fantastic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>JAN 25 \u2014 FEB 1 2011<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>Baryshnikov Arts Center <span>(in collaboration with Dance Films Association\u2019s 39th Dance on Camera Festival)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>Billy Cowie Retrospective<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Award-winning Scottish video artist\/composer Cowie presents his four-screen installation <em>Men in the Wall<\/em>. 3D glasses provide viewers with an altered view of four men whose lives are as private as they are different.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>JAN 28, JAN 30<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">David H. It will become<\/span> the companion piece to her 1999 Ellington-inspired work <em>Blossom Got Kissed<\/em>.
