Good to see you at Chamber Music America, and then to see this first installment. Great questions, great answers, and a good read to boot! I look forward to the next read. And in this ever-changing musical landscape, I'm sure there will be no shortage of topics. Cheers! -- Martha Woods

Fantastic replies from Edna regarding the commissioning for new music. Kickstarter is terrific--but beware--try to set a reasonable goal, because if you don't meet that goal in the project time frame, you won't receive the funding. You can always earn more funds than the desired goal. The competition idea is wonderful too, as there are many wonderful composers seeking a voice for their music. Another way is to simply ask friends--you never know who knows who, and also, the American Music Center is a fantastic place to have serve as a conduit for funding. The AMC, as well as Kickstarter, being not-for profits, take a % of the take. If you are seeking a concerto, keep in mind that it is more expensive to hire a trio, however, perhaps you have conductor friends who would be interested to have their orchestra(s) commission a new solo concerto for you. Good luck!

Brava, Edna, on starting your new blog, a meaningful and encouraging way to see serious discussion of issues for younger artists given some rightful exposure. And how great to see your first installment focus on commissioning new work!
Congratulations. Looking forward to reading Ask Edna regularly.
All the best,
Porter
