Unfotunately, I don't think the problem with the Met's Fanciulla is the set design, but rather the singing. Seldom have I seen such an uninspiring ensemble of singers.

A nice assessment of the aesthetics of this "Fanciulla." Just one small bone to pick: Remember "America" when you're blogging for Musical America. The post is a little NYCentric in some of its assumptions. New Yorkers and Metizens will know who Mrs. Donald Harrington is and her role as a benefactor, but many outside of New York will not. Similarly, I have no idea what Domingo's role was in this, though you mention him as an enabler. Yes, I'm a journalist and an editor, so context like that matters and is important for your readers.

The always cash strapped Opera Australia is planning it's 5th new La Boheme in 25 years. Covent Garden have made do with two productions in over 110 years. The workings of opera houses the world over never cease to amaze me. We won't even speak of the recent news from Chicago; madness that will end in tears, I think.

A thoughtful comparison of two "natural' productions that serves to illustrate the difference between art ( Zeffirelli) and imitation ( Del Monaco).
Nice to see the much-ridiculed Zeffirelli get a little respect for a change.
