Hi Sedge, long time! Though I appreciate your sniffing at Dick Clark's silly remark and though I am shocked to have learned in his obits that artists got on his show often only by signing away all their copyrights and royalties, I was unware of all that when I watched enthusiastically many afternoons and remember performances by Bobby Rydell, Ricky Nelson, the Supremes, and others. I was always more interested in Beethoven, Bach and Mozart than rock 'n roll, but pop music fascinated me and I spent a year playing in a rock band between high school and college, covering tunes by Otis Redding, Cream, the Nice, Jimi Hendrix, the BeeGees, and of course the Beatles, who remain for me in a class by themselves as musicians. With a little help from George Martin.

Now it's our son who provides links to music he feels we at least ought to be aware of, if not fans of, and my wife and I spend a fair amount of time teaching middle school kids how to sing and play the latest pop wonders, scratching our heads at how unbelievably boring most of the songs are melodically and even more so harmonically.

Hope all is well in your life! My opera ESTHER was revived this season after a 34-year hiatus. See clips at esthertheopera.com.

Best wishes,
Donald
