Dear Mo. Conlon,
Cavolo! Your brilliant essay gives us a glimpse into your interesting life and the history of Mascagni's Cavalleria. "Verachtet mir die Meister nicht." Every aria of Cavalleria is a hit. It was never forgotten in our house. My brother's first grand piece he played on his cello (at 13) was the Intermezzo, and I can whistle it (I wasn't allowed to sing) all the way to the end, where the highest note can't climb any higher. As an American you should be very proud b'cause it was "thy great gift, upon misprision growing, [that came] home again on better judgement making"--home to the musicians/chorus of the Accademia of Santa Cecilia, home to the Roman people, and home to us, where this beautiful music will remain in everyone's heart forever. Grazie mille, Maestro Conlon!
