Absolutely brilliant review of the physical production. Is this the same production that was online earlier from a European venue? These are certainly gloomy times and the last thing we all need is some design queen who is obesssed with making everything uglier. During the Depression films took on a wonderful glossy aspect and everyone was transported for a few hours and came away uplifted, if only for a brief spell. I despise these current sick sister designers, and will never spend one sou to be part of their idea of an operatic experience. Kansas City's splendid new Kauffman Theatre is the sight of a Turnadot that delights all the senses. The audience on opening night was brought to its feet in an uproar befitting what they had just seen, heard, and felt. Bravo! That is opera, not this tired artsy, fartsy bilge that has crossed the pond to contaminate the operatic stage, and let this Gelb go back to whatever crass commerical venue he belched forth from. Talk about NO taste.
