Cellist Yuli Turovsky Dies

Cellist and conductor Yuli Turovsky, founder of Montreal’s I Musici Chamber Orchestra, died on Jan. 14 in Montreal. He was 73.
Turovsky founded I Musici in 1983 and remained its artistic director and conductor until May of 2011, when he was forced to retire because of the effects of Parkinson’s disease. His wife Eleanor, who was principal violinist of I Musici, died last year.
The group continues to tour widely and performs about 100 concerts annually.
Turovsky, born in Russia, played cello from age seven and studied at the Moscow Conservatory. Not long after winning the USSR Cello Competition in 1969 he became principal cello of the Moscow Chamber Orchestra.
He immigrated to Montreal in 1976, apparently with little but the clothes on his back, and formed the Borodin Trio, which toured widely. Both the Borodin and I Musici made numerous recordings with Turovsky as the principal cellist.
Turovsky also performed as a soloist with Canadian orchestras, including the Montreal Symphony and taught at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec à Montréal and the University of Montreal.
