An evening of chamber music by Barbara Harbach will be presented on Friday, January 11 – 7:30 PM in Lee Auditorium of the Touhill Performing Arts Center on the campus of University of Missouri, One University Boulevard in St. Louis.

The program will include the World Premiere of Ms. Harbach’s Phantom of the Dreams’ Origin for chamber orchestra conducted by James Richards and readers Chris King and Stefene Russell, along with performances of Rustic Scene for Viola and Piano by Joanna Mendoza, viola and Alla Voskoboynikova, piano, Nocturne noir for Piano, by Ms. Voskoboynikova and Frontier Fancies for Violin and Piano, performed by John McGrosso, violin and Ruth Price, piano. The concert is dedicated to Veronica Mather George.

Barbara Harbach’s new composition for chamber orchestra was commissioned by Poetry Scores, a St. Louis-based non-profit arts organization that translates poetry into other media. The event is co-produced by Poetry Scores, Women in the Arts, and the Department of Music at the University of Missouri – St. Louis. It is a musical meditation on the poetry of Andreas Embirikos, in English translation by local poets Stefene Russell and Chris King. The piece, titled Phantom of the Dreams’ Origin, sets to music a selection of prose poems from Embirikos’ 1935 masterpiece Blast Furnace. The composition is divided into eight movements, each named after a phrase from Stabakis’ translation of Embirikos: Procession, Lamentation, Semaphores, Desolation, Deprived, Tranquility, Polyhedral bell, Spinning Mill of Nocturnal Repose.
