China To Build Its Own, Billion-$$ Music Row

December 27, 2012
MusicalAmerica.com

In its continuing quest to be the biggest at pretty much everything, China has announced the “China Music Valley,” a “sprawling compound,” as the Guardian describes it, with music schools, instrument manufacturers, five-star hotels, recording studios, and perhaps even a performance hall or two.

It will take ten years, cost about four billion, and decimate an entire rural farm area about an hour outside of Beijing.

China's outgoing president, Hu Jintao, said in November, “Culture is the lifeblood of a nation.” That may be, but because of rampant piracy, the country still hasn’t figured out how to pay its own artists. It will be interesting to watch this latest token behemoth unfold.

According to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, China’s piracy rate is "virtually 100%."
