One of Sweden’s oldest orchestras presents a dynamic concert that combines the traditional with the iconoclastic. Under the direction of Stefan Solyom, the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra (HSO) with its 61 musicians and violin virtuoso Catherine Manoukian perform a thrilling all-Beethoven program, including one of his most celebrated works, the Eroica Symphony. The HSO has performed at many prominent European venues, including three recent sold-out performances at the Great Festival Hall in Salzburg and in Vienna. Sweden’s Dagens Nyheter applauded the HSO’s performance of Beethoven’s Eroica as “…a brutally life-affirming spring river. A grand performance!” |

Clarinetist Jon Manasse and pianist Jon Nakamatsu began performing together as the Manasse/Nakamatsu Duo with a highly acclaimed 2004 performance in Boston. Subsequent coast-to-coast touring has included appearances on some of the country’s most prestigious stages. Individually, Jon Manasse and Jon Nakamatsu have developed extensive repertoires and lengthy discographies. Their hundreds of performances include concerto engagements, solo recitals and chamber music collaborations with orchestras, universities and music festivals, here at home and throughout the world.

The TSYO takes on Dukas’s magical and exhilarating tone poem The Sorcerer’s Apprentice in their second concert of the season. The program also features flutist Sarah Pollard—a 2016/17 TSYO Concerto Competition Winner—and Dvo?ák’s optimistic and colourful Symphony No. 8, inspired by the social life and landscape of his Czech homeland.

Sergei Taneyev - Piano Quintet in G minor, Op. 30
Anton Arensky - String Quartet No. 2 in A minor
Blazing stars such as Tchaikovsky risk eclipsing less sensational talents, but these more modest figures can have their moments of greatness too. Anton Arensky's Quartet, composed in memory of Tchaikovsky, is for an ensemble of single violin, viola and two cellos, giving the sound a haunting dark richness. Quotations from Orthodox chants and from Tchaikovsky's song 'Legend' suggest a prayer for the composers soul, but the outcome is joyous and celebratory. Tchaikovsky's pupil Sergei Taneyev is sometimes called 'the Russian Brahms'. He cherished Classicism and intricate counterpoint and set his face against populist emotionalism. The Young Musicians Foundation's Debut Chamber Orchestra (DCO) continues its 2017-18 concert season with a free concert titled 'burn,' 7:30 p.m. Feb. 9. The program includes Stravinsky's Symphony in Three Movements and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4. Now celebrating its 63rd season, the DCO, led by Lawrence N. Field Conductor-in-Residence Yuga Cohler, is one of the oldest pre-professional training orchestras in the country. Composed of approximately 70 talented musicians ages 15-25 from across the Los Angeles area, the orchestra hones the skills of students who are on the cusp of professional careers. Alumni of the orchestra perform today in virtually every major symphony orchestra in the country. |
